A road traffic accident in Tunapuna has resulted in the death of a 59-year-old man from Curepe, early on Thursday morning.

Guardian Media understands the victim has been identified as Pooran Coon Coon of Mc Clean Street, Curepe.

Police said at about 5:11 am, Coon Coon was driving his white Nissan AD Wagon along the Eastern Main Road in the vicinity of St John’s Road, when his vehicle crashed into the back of a Junior Sammy trailer.

He reportedly died on impact.

Fire officers who responded to the scene had to free his body from the wreckage with the hydraulic cutter also known as the ‘Jaws of Life’.

It is believed that Coon Coon may have fallen asleep behind the wheel.

Investigations are continuing.
