FITUN congratulates Industrial Court President on IMF appointment

The Federation of Independent Trade Unions and Non-Governmental Organizations (FITUN) has extended congratulations to the President of the Industrial Court of Trinidad and Tobago, Her Honour Deborah Thomas-Felix, on her most recent appointment—to the Administrative Tribunal of the IMF, effective March 1st, 2020.

In a release issued today, FITUN expresses hope that this latest elevation would be “a catalyst for the elevation of other expertly and appropriately qualified progressive exponents within our Industrial Relations Jurisprudence to International prominence in the future”.

In the release, FITUN President, Joseph Remy, says this latest appointment is proof of Her Honour’s professionalism, and speak volumes for the quality standards that she exhibits as the head of the Industrial Relations Jurisprudence in Trinidad and Tobago.

“Despite the repeated vacuous and obscene attempts to tarnish the image of the Industrial Court by elements within the various Chambers of Commerce and the local capitalist business class, who believe that they can exploit workers with impunity and in clear violation of the Labour Laws of the Country without recourse,” Mr Remy states in the release, “this latest appointment is a recognition of the fearless independence and professionalism that the Honourable President has demonstrated during her tenure at the head of the Industrial Court of Trinidad and Tobago.”

In the statement, FITUN notes that Her Honour Debra Thomas-Felix was the first Caribbean national to be appointed as a Judge of the United Nations Appeal Tribunal in 2014; she was then elected Second Vice-President in 2015, and President of the Tribunal in 2016.

In 2015, Her Honour was appointed by the Governing Body of the International Labour Organisation (ILO) as a Member of the Committee of Experts on the Application of Conventions and Recommendations—a Committee composed of twenty (20) of the world’s most eminent legal luminaries, who are responsible for monitoring the application of international labour standards.
