Former United National Congress Member of Parliament and minister of health Tim Gopeesingh has contracted COVID-19.

Gopeesingh confirmed this in a post on his Facebook page yesterday.

“I wish to confirm that I have tested positive for COVID-19, the results of which were communicated to me late last night. Under the existing health protocols and guidelines, I am currently in the State’s medical care, where I am being very well managed by a frontline team of nurses, doctors and support staff, for which I am very grateful,” Gopeesingh wrote.

News of Gopeesingh’s positive test came as the Ministry of Health confirmed yesterday that T&T’s active cases of the virus stood at 615 after another 81 cases were recorded yesterday.

This took the overall number of cases to detected since March 12 to 767 with 12 deaths. Yesterday, made it exactly one month since the beginning of the second phase of infection in the country with case number 139. In that time, 628 cases have been recorded with four deaths.

The recent explosion in cases in T&T has also now seen the country’s removal from the United Kingdom’s “Travel Corridor” list. This means anyone arriving into the UK after departing T&T will now be required to self-isolate for two weeks. Also removed from that list were Croatia and Austria.

According to a release from UK government, data from the Joint Biosecurity Centre and Public Health England has indicated a significant change in both the level and pace of confirmed cases of COVID-19 in all three destinations, leading to them being removed from the current Travel Corridor list.
