Government is in a position to fully fund a cancer registry and is willing to partner with the T&T Cancer Society (TTCS) on that initiative.
A registry collects and publishes data on cancer within the country which helps healthcare professionals to more effectively address the disease with evidence-based information.
Health Minister Terrance Deyalsingh said so on Tuesday when he attended the handover of two buses to the TTCS by businesswoman Hannah Janoura. He also used the opportunity to announce plans to tackle the country’s high rate of non-communicable diseases (NCDs), including the launch of a gestational diabetes screening programme.
In his brief remarks at the ceremony at the MovieTowne car park, Deyalsingh said it was a celebration of selfless giving and “the human spirit that does not take no for an answer” that exemplifies Janoura.
He also paid tribute to TTCS chairman emeritus Dr George Laquis who was among the guests at the event.
Dr Laquis shared his vision for cancer care in T&T to evolve to the point of prevention because that will yield considerable savings to the economy.
TTCS chairman Dr Asante Le Blanc said the buses will be used to transport patients to and from treatment and the donation will change thousands of lives across the country.
