Hours after Sangre Grande mother and son Joycelyn and Anthony Doyle were laid to rest after dying from COVID-19, came news that another mother and son from the area had also succumbed to the disease.

These latest deaths have created worry in the Brooklyn Settlement community, as residents blame a lack of vaccination for the fatalities.

Pensioner Kathrina Joshua, 74, and her son Bernard Tommy Delvine, 52, of Brooklyn Settlement, Sangre Grande, succumbed to COVID-19 just a few days apart.

Residents in the community told Guardian Media that Joshua, who sold snacks at the Sangre Hospital, died at Couva Hospital last Thursday night, while her son Bernard, a maxi taxi driver, died on Sunday at the Arima Hospital.

Both mother and son were not vaccinated.

This is the second mother and son duo to die from the same area from the disease.

Joycelyn Doyle and her son Anthony were buried at the Turure Cemetery, Sangre Grande on Tuesday after both died from COVID-19 in October.

Back in May this year, a father and son of Siparia both died of COVID-19 just hours apart.

Pensioner Premnath, 66, and his 36-year- old son Nigel Ramklawan died at home after contracting the disease.

There have been other instances where siblings, as well as husbands and wives in the same household, have died from COVID.

Meanwhile, concerned residents of Brooklyn Settlement, Sangre Grande, are calling on the Eastern Regional Health Authority to implement a house-to-house drive to encourage vaccinations in the community.

They claimed that the low acceptance of COVID-19 vaccines among some residents is fuelling the spread of the disease.
