A Sangre Grande school girl who went to check on her grandmother on Monday night after hearing shouts coming from her bedroom instead witnessed the 71-year-old woman’s murder.

According to police, the girl was in a bathroom in the Mandillon Road, Coalmine, Sangre Grande house around 11.30 pm when she heard shouts coming from the bedroom of her grandmother, Kowsil Ramkhelawan.

The girl ran to the room to check and when she opened Ramkhelawan’s bedroom door, she saw a man sitting on her grandmother’s chest and stabbing her repeatedly.

When he realised he had been discovered, the man ran off.

Police said he was dressed in a brown hoodie and was wearing a mask.

Ramkhelawan, who had been stabbed several times in the left of her chest, died on the scene.

WPC Moses of the Sangre Grande Police and officers of Homicide Region 2 responded to the scene.

District Medical Officer Dr Rampersad viewed the body, which was removed by undertakers to the Sangre Grande mortuary, from where it was expected to be taken to the Forensic Science Centre, St James for an autopsy.

PC Andrews of Arouca Homicide Bureau Region 11 is continuing investigation.
