The Green Market Santa Cruz will be hosting its annual Chocolate Day on Saturday 18th September. Chocolate Day will start at 7 am and end at 12:30 pm. Details follow in this press release.

On Saturday 18th September the Green Market Santa Cruz will host its annual Chocolate Day, a celebration of chocolate in this time of COVID-19. Many of T&T’s chocolate makers and cocoa farmers will showcase their innovations in food, drink, and artisanal products, reminding the national community of all the wonderful health benefits especially of dark chocolate.

“I strongly believe that, as a people, if we put our heads together, we can build a novel cocoa value chain that can provide opportunities for diversification of the TT economy while creating employment and providing much needed FOREX,” explained Path Umaharan, Professor of Genetics and Director of the Cocoa Research Centre (CRC) in a conversation with Vicki Assevero, founder of the Green Market. CRC is the oldest cocoa research centre is the world and a global leader in both conservation of cocoa germplasm and collaboration with global industry stakeholders.  Umaharan also highlighted the practical work that CRC does to support the industry in T&T:

“CRC has also established the International Fine Cocoa Innovation Centre to support local training, technology services, business and technology incubation of SMEs. Our services to support SMEs include apprenticeship training, product development support, rental of space, branding support as well as provision of quality certified intermediary products like cocoa nibs, cocoa liquor, cocoa couverture. CRC also develops new equipment to support better fermentation and drying and improves consistency of quality in farms.   CRC has also purchased equipment to establish a commercial factory to further improve local demand.  We are seeking a private sector collaborator for this.”

The Green Market will welcome back Astrida Saunders, the original “cocoa lady”, who graduated from the Green Market to open her own Chocolate Bar Café in 2017 and will be introducing her new cocoa drop drinks. This event is part of the Green Market’s continuous efforts to promote local land-based entrepreneurs.

The Green Market also spoke with Lady Liz Montano, who related her generational family project—a chocolate factory opening in Arouca, designed specifically as an additional support for cocoa farmers. She said this new project will be on GMSC’s social media.

This special chocolate Market will feature chocolatiers Michael Ballman of the Trinidad and Tobago Fine Cocoa Company, Daniel Stollmeyer of Level Enhanced Chocolates. Svadisa will offer chocolate samosas.

All the artisans and food vendors have prepared special offerings of cocoa based and chocolatey delicacies for sale. Brunch goers can sample items such as chocolate churros and cocoa wings and fries and refresh themselves with cocoa chai. There will be cocoa based skincare products on sale as well, from local skincare brand Cocoa Dreams and Babita’s. A special door prize will be provided by Cocobel.

Chocolate Day will start at 7 am and end at 12:30 pm.

“Come and get a good dose of antioxidants, nutrients like magnesium, copper, zinc and selenium—Nature’s special ingredients to boost your immune system and lower your blood pressure, which we all need during this time,” Assevero said.
