A 13-year-old boy died after he was hit by a vehicle while crossing the road in Guapo. The child has been identified as Zion Roop of Guapo.

The driver, an estate constable, told police that around 3.20 pm on Monday he was heading towards La Brea along Southern Main Road, Gonzales Village, in his silver Mercedes Benz. He saw the boy standing on the left side of the roadway near IAI Road. He claimed the child suddenly ran across the road and he swerved to the left to avoid hitting him, but he still collided with the boy.

Bystanders ran to the boy’s assistance and put him in a private vehicle. He was pronounced dead on arrival at the Point Fortin Area Hospital.

Police recorded statements from the driver. An autopsy is expected to be done this morning at the Forensic Science Centre, Port-of-Spain.

Visiting the scene was a party of officers from the Guapo Police Station including Sgt Ali, Cpl Boodhai, WCpl Frederick and WPC Ashby.

Cpl Boodhai is investigating.
