Gun, ammunition seized, suspect escaped

The Trinidad and Tobago Police Service says that they retrieved a gun and nine rounds of 40-calibre ammunition after chasing a man on Richardson Lane, Laventille, but the suspect escaped. Details follow in this press release from the TTPS:

Police retrieved a firearm outfitted with an extended magazine and nine rounds of 40-calibre ammunition yesterday after chasing a man on Richardson Lane, Laventille.

Around 9:15 am yesterday officers on mobile patrol in the area observed a man known to them. They called out to him and upon observing the marked police vehicle, he continued walking briskly. Officers alighted from the vehicle and called out to the suspect again, however, he began to run in a southerly direction. A chase ensued during which the man allegedly removed an object from the waist of his pants and tossed it in some nearby bushes. One of the officers stopped and retrieved the object which turned out to be a firearm. The other officers continued to chase the suspect, but he escaped after running through some nearby tracks. An extensive search was conducted but proved futile.

PC Blackman is continuing enquiries.

The patrol included Cpl Yearwood, PCs Blackman and Dryce, and other members of the Belmont Operations Unit.
