Homeowner injured fighting house fire

Investigations are continuing into two house fires that occurred this week at Diego Martin and Cunupia.

In the most recent incident, Marlon Dowers, 54, a mechanic, was in the garage of his home at Sparrow Drive, Petit Valley, when a friend alerted him to a fire emanating from his house. Dowers looked and saw his house on fire.

He sprung into action by attempting to extinguish the blaze however the fire spread to the mechanical garage, which is a steel and galvanized structure.

Five vehicles – a Hyundai Elantra, a Mazda 323, a Honda Civic, a Nissan B14 and a Nissan B13, which were parked in the garage were damaged in the fire.

Dowers sustained injuries to the head, shoulders and back while attempting to extinguish the fire and was taken to seek medical attention at the St James Medical Complex.

He valued his losses at approximately $300,000.

Meanwhile, in the Central Division, fire prevention officers are investigating a fire in Cunupia which resulted in over $150,000 in damage.

The fire occurred at about 1 pm on Tuesday at a house at Pony Street, off Hinkin Trace, Cunupia.

Police said a 61-year-old man was conducting welding works at his home when sparks from the cutting torch fell onto a nearby mattress.

The mattress caught a blaze which spread around the home.

The police and fire services were notified and the fire was contained.

No injuries were reported.
