A Tobago man has been ordered to vacate his home following allegations made by his common-law wife that she was beaten with a cutlass during a domestic dispute.

Dwayne Roberts-Greene, 41, of Tank Road, Signal Hill, was also ordered to stay 100 feet away from her.

Roberts-Greene pleaded not guilty and was placed on $75,000 bail when he appeared before a Tobago magistrate. The incident is alleged to have taken place on Tuesday.

He will reappear before the same court on January 5, 2021.

Roberts-Greene was charged with two counts of common assault, larceny and attempted choking with intent

The Police Service said in a release that the charges, laid by PC Sandy, of the Tobago Division Gender-Based Violence Unit (GBVU), arose out of an incident in which a 41-year-old woman reported to police that her common-law husband allegedly attacked her.

According to the woman, she arrived at her Tank Road, Signal Hill Road home at 9.30 pm after braiding someone’s hair when her common-law husband arrived soon after.

She claimed Roberts-Greene began quarrelling with her about her whereabouts.

The woman reported to police that he became annoyed, took up a cutlass and dealt her several blows to her body.

She managed to relieve him of the weapon after which he reportedly armed himself with a scissors and allegedly attempted to stab her with it.

She again managed to relieve him of the weapon following which he allegedly placed his hands around her neck choked her.

The woman wrestled him off, freeing herself and took up her cell phone to call for assistance.

While doing so, however, the woman told police he grabbed hold of the cell phone and broke it in half. A report was made to police on the same day.

The GBVU took charge of the case and took the woman to be medically treated.

The woman is also being provided with counselling services by the Police Service, through the Victim and Witness Support Unit.
