After boycotting 2019’s Carnival parade in San Fernando, Kalicharan Carnival’s return to the parade of the bands competition won them another band of the year title.
Their presentation of “Street Jam” won them their 27th title, the most held by any Carnival band in T&T. However, veteran bandleader Ivan Kalicharan said it was their worst year in terms of participation. The band dropped from 800 to approximately 500. There was an overall decrease in participation in Tuesday mas in the southern city. Convener of Carnival Naigum Joseph said a meeting of stakeholders will be held soon to come up with an action plan to boost Carnival 2021.
Lionel Jagessar & Associates’ Untamed Territory and Fire Works Promotions were the runners’ up.
In the J’Ouvert (modern) competition, B Man and Lord Street Fusion placed first, with A&K Fashion Lab and Dev’s Barber Crew taking second and third respectively. J’Ouvert in San Fernando had high participation despite fewer bands registering for this year’s competition. San Fernando Mayor Junia Regrello said they are yet to receive funding from the NCC but a cheque has been issued.
