The following is a Good Friday message from Opposition Leader Kamla Persad-Bissessar:

As Christians across the world observe one of the most sacred days, I would like to wish them, and the wider community a very solemn, devout and holy Good Friday.

After a prayerful and reflective Lenten season and Holy Week, Christians observe this revered day which marks the pillar upon which their faith is built, the day when Jesus Christ suffered and died for the forgiveness of sins before resurrecting on the third day.

Today as we meditate on the Passion of Jesus, we must call to mind His blessed teachings which led to His persecution, as they all provide the inspiration we need as a world and nation to conquer the economic, social and emotional hardships we face due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Jesus’ declaration, “whatsoever you do to the least of your brothers and sisters, you do unto me,” is exceptionally relevant today as our world struggles through these uncertain times, as it reminds us that we have a duty to those who are suffering.

Today, regardless of our individual beliefs, we can all join our Christian friends as they ponder the Crucifixion of Jesus whose Passion continues to be reflected in the hungry, the poor, the sick, the homeless, the aged, the lonely and outcast.

We must be inspired by the sacrifice of Jesus and offer our own time and resources to assist those without a kind shoulder to lean on.

Additionally, I urge our authorities to expedite the time and action needed to help those who are suffering from the economic fallout of COVID-19. I remind them that today many are without jobs, meals, medicine and hope. I call on them to intensify their efforts to protect our vulnerable in this most worrying time.

Finally, I implore citizens: do not imitate those who condemned Jesus to die because they were afraid of and misunderstood Him. Instead, choose compassion and generosity over fear and selfishness.

As we face the burdens of COVID-19 let us never lose hope or trust in the Lord but affirm our faith as Jesus did in the garden of Gethsemane, “Father, if You are willing, take this cup from Me; yet not My will, but Yours be done.”

May God bless our nation.
