Kamla: PM woefully short on ideas

Opposition Leader Kamla Persad Bissessar says the Prime Minister failed to provide any hope or comfort to citizens or a plan to deal with the situation during his address to the nation. In a press release issued this afternoon, the Opposition Leader stated that “In spite of his abject failure, as well as that of his medical team to get the virus under control and prevent deaths, Rowley’s appeal to citizens at this time when more than 2,000 people have died, rings hollow.”

The following is a press release from the Opposition Leader:

On a day that the country recorded its deadliest day on record in the pandemic, the Prime Minister spent close to an hour addressing the nation but failed to provide any hope or comfort to citizens, or a plan to deal with the situation.

In spite of his abject failure, as well as that of his medical team to get the virus under control and prevent deaths, Rowley’s appeal to citizens at this time when more than 2,000 people have died, rings hollow.

Since this pandemic began the Government’s policy prescriptions have revolved around three areas. Firstly they have repeated shallow slogans such as “following the science” without providing any data.

Secondly, they have spent most of their time congratulating themselves, again without any justification.

And lastly, they have mindlessly dismissed all critics and anyone who refuses to tow the government line that everything is fine, as “naysayers” or “unpatriotic”. Judging by Rowley’s address to the nation, nothing is going to change.

It is unacceptable that the Rowley led Government is comfortable doing the same thing over and over and expecting different results.

Thousands in our nation are concerned, worried and many are grieving due to the untimely loss of loved ones, yet not a single plan was put forward by the Prime Minister.

Our prayers go out to all those who have been affected by this pandemic, and we insist that there must also be sound leadership and decisive action to mitigate the crisis we face.

Our nation simply cannot go on like this.
