Opposition Leader and former Prime Minister, Kamla Persad-Bissessar, as she announced her plans to sue the health minister for defamation

Health Minister Terrence Deyalsingh is being sued by Opposition Leader Kamla Persad Bissessar, for claims that she had a hand in the cover up of swine flu figures.

Last year, Minister Deyalsingh claimed that while she was Prime Minister, Mrs Persad-Bissessar had instructed health officials to hide the flu mortality statistics from 2013 to 2015.

Deyalsingh’s claim was in response to the Opposition accusing him of data suppression.

However, during a political meeting in Pointe-a-Pierre last evening, the Opposition Leader said she will be taking legal action against the health minister, as he failed to apologize for making the claims she deemed as slanderous.

“I am claiming damages and costs, aggravated damages, exemplary damages and every type of damage you get for their lies,” she stated. “This man went on TV and radio December last year and said ‘Kamla instructed public servants to hide the H1N1 data’.”

The Opposition Leader says she will be seeing the health minister in court, very soon.

The defamation matter has been filed in the Supreme Court.
