A 31-year-old man from Belmont who was shot just after midnight on Sunday in Belmont, has succumbed to his injuries.

The deceased has been identified as Afiba Guerra, also called Assim Webster.

According to a police report, at about 12:25 am on Monday, police officers responded to a report of gunshots being heard at Belmont Valley Road, Belmont. 

While en route to the location, they saw a white Nissan B-15 motor vehicle driving at a fast pace. When the officers intercepted the vehicle, the driver informed them that he was taking Guerra to the Port-of-Spain General Hospital for medical attention.  Guerra had been shot in his left shoulder and the middle of his back,

The officers escorted the driver to the hospital where Guerra was handed over to medical personnel who treated him.

However, police said Guerra succumbed to his injuries at about 3:07 am, today.

Guardian Media understands that investigating officers are yet to ascertain the location of the initial crime scene.

Investigations are continuing.
