One man is now homeless after a fire gutted his house in San Fernando on Saturday night.
When the fire broke out around 8.20 pm, relatives thought he was still inside the house, but it was later confirmed that he managed to escape. Up to yesterday morning, however, the owner, Vishnu Mattai had not returned to the area.
Mattai’s sister Parbatee Ragoonanan who lives next door, said her brother lived alone in the house at Lady Hailes Avenue. She said he had an argument with a woman over money sometime before the fire.
She claimed shortly before the fire he told another relative that he was going away and then he went home.
“But, apparently when the house catch on fire he jump through the back window and gone,” she added.
However, Ragoonanan said they initially thought that he was trapped in the house.
Had it not been for the quick actions of her neighbour, Ragoonanan said the flames would have also engulfed her house.
“Thank God for the neighbour across the road, if not for the neighbour across the road my house would have burned down too. The neighbour come and burst the tank and take the water and throwing water. The bath, toilet everything catch on fire and my house is a board house. If wasn’t for them my house would ah burn down.”
Police were trying to locate Mattai yesterday to interview him.
Officers from the San Fernando Police Station and the Mon Repos Fire Station responded and are continuing investigations.
