The Trinidad and Tobago Police Service (TTPS) is confirming that a 22-year-old man who was caught on social media beating a woman in the middle of the road, was arrested on Sunday night after the incident.

22-year-old Shaquille Sarjeant will appear before a Chaguanas Magistrate tomorrow, Tuesday 18th August 2020, to answer to charges laid today.

A release from the TTPS states that around 9 pm on Sunday 16th August, the Central Command Centre received a domestic violence report, and conveyed the information to officers on mobile patrol.

WPC Harper and PC Francois, attached to the Cunupia Police Station, quickly made their way to the Hillview Park area.

The TTPS says upon arrival, the officers observed a young woman in distress in the middle of the road. She was clad in a pink top and pair of blue shorts.

The woman reportedly told police officers that the father of her children had been beating her along the roadway.

Witnesses also gave statements to the police.  Bystanders informed the officers that the assailant was a man wearing a light-coloured t-shirt and blue three-quarter pants.

Police went in search of the suspect and minutes later, they found him walking along Day Drive, Cunupia.

The suspect was taken to the Cunupia Police Station where he was formally charged today, Monday August 17th, 2020, by WPC Harper.

According to police reports, the victim, who is a mother of two, was referred to the Victim and Witness Support Unit and the Gender Based Violence Unit of the TTPS.

The TTPS says the children were handed over to their grandfather for safe keeping.
