Man killed during an attack with police

One man was shot by police in San Juan near his home after he allegedly tried to attack a party of police officers with a cutlass on Tuesday. The deceased who was identified as Sammy “Rasta” Gumbs from Zion Hill, San Juan later died at hospital.

According to a police report, at about 2.15 pm a team of officers from the North Eastern Division received intelligence that Gumbs had been linked to crimes in the area, and proceeded to his home on inquiries.

Police said when the officers made their way to Gumbs’ home they were allegedly confronted by him armed with a cutlass in one hand and a knife in the other.

The officers allegedly instructed him to drop his weapons but he allegedly refused and instead attempted to run up towards them.

Police said one of the police officers while reaching for his Taser slipped and fell. Gumbs on seeing the officer on the ground attempted to chop him, however, other police officers quickly drew their guns and opened fire on Gumbs.

Gumbs who was shot twice on both his legs subsequently fell and was taken by the officers to the Eric Williams Medical Sciences Complex in Mt Hope.

However, he was pronounced dead at 3.03 pm that day.ASP Pariman is investigating.
