A 35-year-old unemployed man from Crown Point appeared before a Scarborough Virtual Magistrates Court charged with three traffic offenses after he tried to evade police during a traffic stop last Tuesday.

Rudhra Singh, of John Gorman Trace, was charged with driving with no driver’s permit, no certificate of insurance and wanton driving when he appeared in court on Wednesday.

The court heard that on Tuesday (September 8), officers PC Antoine and WPC Remy-Cooper, who are attached to the Traffic Branch, were on patrol when they allegedly stopped Singh, who was never issued a driver’s permit, during a routine traffic exercise. He was driving a rented motor vehicle along the Claude Noel Highway in Orange Hill at the time. However, in his quest to escape the police, he reversed, hitting Antoine.

Singh pleaded guilty to the offense of driving with no permit and no certificate of insurance and was fined $1,000 or three months hard labour and $4,000 or nine months hard labour respectively. He was then placed on $75,000 registrar bail or a cash alternative of $10,000 for the wanton driving. He was also ordered to report to the Scarborough Police Station every Saturday. He is scheduled to reappear in court on October 6.

WPC Remy Cooper and PC Antoine of the Scarborough Traffic Branch laid the charges.
