The Rodriguez family has been given assurances of more support from the Ministry of Social Development and Family Services following the tragic passing of three children during a fire at their Maraval home, on July 26th, 2021.

The family received a visit from Minister Donna Cox today, Wednesday 4th August, following a request for further assistance.

The Minister, accompanied by the technical officers of the Ministry visited the home of Linda Rodriguez, grandmother of the three children who had perished in the tragic fire.

Also accompanying the Minister and her team were Member of Parliament for Port-of-Spain South, Keith Scotland MP, and the CEO of the National Self-Help Commission Ltd, Elroy Julien.

During the visit, the Minister presented Linda Rodriguez with two food hampers. National Director of the NSDP, Patricia De Leon-Henry was also on hand to obtain relevant information on the household’s situation.

In addition, Linda Rodriguez’s two sons—both of whom currently are unemployed, but who possess skills in Masonry and Electrical Installation—received information on the Ministry’s Sowing Empowerment through Entrepreneurial Development (SEED) Programme.

Minister Cox indicated this type of activity forms part of the government’s agenda in adopting a whole of government approach to rendering assistance to families in need.

“We understand that Jenille Rodriguez and her two children are staying with her mother and therefore, we are trying as much as possible, to bring ease and comfort to the family,” Minister Cox explained.

She added: “We also understand that Ms Linda Rodriguez applied for assistance under the National Self-Help Programme and therefore, I want to thank the CEO Mr Elroy Julien for attending today, as we work collaboratively try to assist the family.”

The Minister also indicated that plans are underway to prepare an HDC home for Jenille Rodriguez and her family.
