As only vaccinated students in Forms Four to Six ready themselves to return to the physical classroom on October 4, the Ministry of Education (MoE) has issued guidelines by which all students and teachers are expected to operate.

In a release yesterday, the ministry said all Forms Four and Six teachers are expected to report for duty come October 4 to their assigned school.

The ministry also referred to the national vaccination drive which it claimed, “signalled a hopeful start for the safe return of our students to the physical classroom.”

Children aged 12 years and older now have the option to receive the Pfizer vaccine, which is the only such inoculation approved by the World Health Organization (WHO) for persons in this age range.

The ministry said over one million vaccines have been administered to citizens, including 39,120 to citizens between the ages of 12 to 18.

Following several rounds of consultation with key stakeholders and the recognized majority union, the ministry assured that it has communicated the guidelines and operational requirements to principals of all secondary schools.

“Teachers who are timetabled to deliver instruction to fully vaccinated students of Forms 4-6 are required to report for duty at their assigned schools to deliver instruction via the face-to-face modality. Physical attendance notwithstanding, teachers are encouraged to utilise blended methods of curriculum delivery,” the ministry said.

It said it is continuing the distribution of laptops and MiFi devices to teachers and students for additional support to schools for the blended learning modality and substitute teachers are being identified to temporarily fill teaching vacancies. Principals are required to submit school plans, based on a ministry template, to their line supervisors identifying the measures by which Forms 4 to 6 students not attending physical classes will have access to educational material.
