Mom arrested for not reporting sexual assault against daughters

A 36-year-old mother is expected to appear before a Mayaro Magistrate today to answer to five counts of failing to report suspected sexual assault against her daughters. Her companion, a 40-year-old man, will also appear to answer to seven counts of sexual penetration of a child and one count of sexual touching of a child.

The duo was held following a comprehensive investigation led by WPC La Fortune of the Eastern CPU surrounding the details of the victims’ ordeal.
According to police reports, the 17-year-old victim walked into the Mayaro Police Station and reported to officers that her stepfather had been sexually assaulting both she and her 14-year-old sister for a number of years.

She further told police that she confided in her mother about the abuse on several occasions and that the mother allegedly did nothing to stop it.

The woman and man are set to answer to five counts of failing to report suspected sexual penetration and seven counts of sexual penetration of a child and one count of sexual touching of a child, respectively, when they appear before a Mayaro Magistrate today.

The CPU wishes to take this opportunity to remind parents and guardians to exercise the highest degree of caution when it comes to the care and supervision of their children. The CPU stresses that many times, children fall victim to crimes and abuse by those closely-knitted to their family, and as such, it is incumbent of parents to be extremely vigilant and constantly screen those who are interacting with their children.
