Mom in court for failing to report daughter’s rape

A 36-year-old woman was scheduled to appear before a Mayaro Magistrate yesterday to answer to five counts of failing to report suspected sexual penetration of her daughters.

Her companion, a 40-year-old man,was also slated to appear to answer to seven counts of sexual penetration of a child and one count of sexual touching of a child.

According to the police the 17-year-old victim walked into the Mayaro Police Station and reported to officers that her stepfather had been sexually assaulting both she and her 14-year-old sister for a number of years.

She further told officers that she confided in her mother about the abuse on several occasions and that the mother allegedly did nothing to stop it.

In an unrelated incident a 19-year-old unemployed man, who resides in Maloney Gardens, was arrested by officers of the Port-of-Spain Child Protection Unit (CPU) for allegedly sexually assaulting his 14-year-old aunt.

The man was expected to appear before a Port-of-Spain Magistrate on Monday charged with one count of sexual penetration of a child.

He was arrested on Saturday following a report made by a 14-year-old girl that while she was at home sleeping on the couch, she was awakened by a man who was inserting his penis into her vagina.

When the victim arrived at the Besson Street Police Station, she told police that the attack ceased after she raised an alarm.

And in another incident a 26-year-old Cocorite appeared in court charged with one count of cruelty to a child.

The man, who was arrested on Wednesday charged with the offence on Sunday following an enquiry into an alleged assault which occurred on the day of his arrest.

According to the eight-year-old victim, while he was asleep, the accused allegedly used tie straps and bounded his hand.

The man, the boy told police, then dealt him several kicks and cuffs about his body causing him injuries.
