An autopsy was finally performed on the body of mother of one, Shannon Whyte, revealing that she died from a single gunshot wound to the head.

However, her death remains unclassified as enquiries continue to determine whether the wound was self-inflicted or if she was murdered.

The autopsy, which was initially postponed for Wednesday, instead was conducted late on Monday as the investigating officers showed up later than expected at the Forensic Science Centre.

The body of 29-year-old Shannon Whyte was found by a close male relative submerged in a barrel of water at their home at Mon Repos, Morvant, last Thursday night.

On removing the body from the barrel, officers discovered that Whyte was holding a firearm in her right hand.  Her right elbow was bent, and her hand was pointed upward holding the firearm, with her thumb on the trigger.

Crime scene personnel processed the scene and retrieved one Glock 23 Firearm, one .40 spent shell casing lodged in the firearm, and 20 rounds of .40 calibre ammunition in the magazine.

A relative told police that he had visited their home at 4 pm on Thursday and reportedly heard noises coming from inside but he did not see anyone.

The 31-year-old close male relative was questioned by police but subsequently released.

Police said homicide investigators and pathologists are now left to carry out further investigations to determine the angle from which the bullet wound was inflicted, as well as the origin of the bullet’s trajectory (direction of movement).

Investigations continue.
