A 37-year-old mother will appear before a Sangre Grande Magistrates’ Court on Tuesday 9th June 2020, for wilful neglect and assault of her 16-year-old autistic son.
Officers of the Child Protection Unit (CPU) are actively searching for a 37-year-old man in connection with the case. The self-employed mechanic is also suspected of abusing the teenager.
Official police reports are that on Wednesday 27th May 2020, CPU Eastern Division received a report that the 16-year-old was seen lying on a mat outside an apartment. It was further reported that the child’s mother and stepfather were in the habit of abusing him.
Officers of Child Protection removed the child from the home and placed him in the care of another relative.
Following investigations into the incident, the 37-year-old woman of Sangre Grande was arrested and charged on Monday 8th June 2020. The stepfather has since absconded the home and a warrant has been issued for his arrest.
The investigation is being spearheaded by W/Supt. (Ag) George, ASP Sookdeo, and supervised by W/Insp Bain-Keller.
