Two days after a dilapidated bridge was condemned, several drivers are risking their lives by traversing on it.

Tabaquite MP Anita Haynes said barriers and caution tape were installed by Couva Tabaquite Talparo Regional Corporation blocking off the bridge at Lightbourne Road, Bonne Aventure Road, Gasparillo on Monday.

“But because of the need of the citizens in this area they have taken the very huge risk of taking down the bamboo that is preventing them from passing. They have ignored the road closure signs and they continue to use this condemned bridge,” she said. Haynes says the bridge needs to replaced as soon as possible. “I am calling on the Ministry of Rural Development and Local Government to assist us the replacing of this wooden bridge as soon as possible. There is a great need. It services a huge community and we need this bridge replaced as soon as possible.”

Several motorists who spoke with Guardian Media said they knew the bridge was closed, but it’s a shortcut to get to their destination.

Other motorists said they thought the bridge was given the all clear after they noticed the barriers were removed.
