Chaguanas West MP Dinesh Rambally has called on citizens to be vigilant in light of the rising crime situation in central Trinidad.

Speaking with Guardian Media as he distributed toys and snacks to around 6,000 children in his constituency yesterday, Rambally said the last few weeks had seen a rise in home invasions in Felicity and environs.

He said it was only last week (December 16), an armed gunman attempted to enter his office at Munroe Road and rob him and his staff, while two days, also at Munroe Road, armed men attempted to rob a man of his Hilux outside a restaurant.

Rambally said larceny of vehicles and robbery are also high on the list for the criminal element.

“We cannot cower in fear at criminal elements, we have to keep our guard up and be alert,” Rambally said.

He said Commissioner of Police Gary Griffith was doing the best he can with the limited resources at his disposal.

“The Government has to get a handle on it, the CoP is doing the best, a holistic approach is needed to bring down the crime wave,” he said.

Rambally also said he was pleased to hear Minister of Health Terrence Deyalsingh announce that T&T would be looking towards China as a source for the COVID-19 vaccine. He said the plans are for the inoculation of one-third of the population with the vaccines from Covax but argued Government should pick up the pace and purchase additional vaccines to ensure at least two-thirds of the population is vaccinated. He said this figure would create what is termed herd immunity, which occurs when a large portion of a community (the herd) becomes immune to a disease, making the spread of disease from person to person unlikely, protecting the whole community.

Rambally said funding for the additional vaccines could come from the Heritage and Stabilisation Fund. He said once COVID is behind us, the economy and the level of food security can improve.
