A landmark building housing the office of Moruga MP, Michelle Benjamin, has been gutted by fire.

Benjamin suspects the fire was maliciously set. It occurred just after midnight at #4 Petite Cafe, Princes Town.

Speaking to Guardian Media, Benjamin said she got a call around 1 am and when she arrived, fire officers and the police were on the scene. While the building was still standing, nothing inside could be saved.

Benjamin said the fire is believed to have started in the office of the manager which had nothing except a phone, a monitor, and the DVR.

“There were no other electronics in there, so I am puzzled. The damages are significant, and I am very shaken because a few weeks ago, we had a break-in and we installed security cameras,” Benjamin added.

She said a day before the fire, T&TEC came and checked the meter.  All of the AC units were serviced as well so I do not think this was an electrical fire,” she added.

Benjamin said if the fire was maliciously set, she did not think the arsonist was part of her UNC family.
