A police officer was among three men who were yesterday denied bail on kidnapping, robbery, firearm and ammunition charges.
Police Constable Joseph Johnson, 22, Kerwin Joseph and Shaquille Pierre appeared before Magistrate Kerianne Byer via virtual hearing from the San Fernando Police Station on five charges arising out of two separate incidents last Thursday (June 11).
The first incident occurred around 10 pm when three armed men robbed a 37-year-old woman and a 42-year-old man in the yard of their Iere Village, Princes Town home. The woman was robbed of jewellery, US$10, TT$5,500, $2,000 worth of cigarettes and a quantity of Digicel and Bmobile phone cards valued at $500. The man was robbed of two cellphones, a $10,000 gold bera, $9,000 gold chain, $7,500 and a DVR system valued at $4,000.
The other charge alleged that around 11 pm Renarco Pierre, the cousin of Shaquille Pierre, was at his Pleasantville home when he was abducted by three men in a black SUV. The police intercepted the vehicle at Pluck Road, Woodland and rescued the victim, who was handcuffed. The three alleged kidnappers were arrested and subsequently charged by Sgt Maharaj.
Johnson was last assigned to the Guard and Emergency Branch and has almost two years service. He was represented by attorney Cedric Neptune, who asked for early disclosure. Prosecutor Sgt Harold Ishmael objected to bail on the kidnapping and firearm charges based on the Bail Amendment Act. The matter was adjourned to July 15.
