With the occupancy rates for villas and hotels projected to be over 90 per cent and over 60 per cent, respectively officials say Tobago is fully prepared for the influx of visitors for the Easter holidays.
That’s according to officials from the Tobago House of Assembly (THA) and Trinidad and Tobago Police Service (TTPS) among others.
Speaking at a virtual media briefing on Monday, the Tobago Tourism Agency Ltd’s Chief Executive Officer Louis Lewis said tourism properties are doing well.
“We have recognised that the villas and private accommodations are experiencing a higher than normal level of occupancy in the upper 90s.
“` The hotels and smaller properties are doing better than normal and this is very encouraging. There is a very strong demand coming out of the domestic market in Trinidad.”
He said hotels are projecting an occupancy rate of “between 60 and 70 per cent” and Caribbean Airlines is fully booked until April 11, the end of the season.
“We have Caribbean Airlines that have put daily, 12 flights by the jet and five flights of the ATR’s, so that is significant. It is difficult to get a flight up until April 11,’ Lewis said.
And Ag Inspector of the TTPS Tobago Division, Alicia Piggott, said there would be zero tolerance towards anyone breaching COVID-19 protocols.
“Additional resources have been deployed, including the tourism-oriented police, along with the bicycle patrol and several other officers are placed strategically in identified areas where persons frequent over this particular period to ensure there is compliance.”
She said bar owners who allowed patrons to remain inside their bars after the stipulated closing times should stop the practice as police would be on the lookout for offenders.
THA’s Secretary of Health, Wellness, and Family Development Tracy Davidson- Celestine, whose division hosted the conference, said, “Tobago is ready to receive guests over the Easter period.”
She said all the tourism stakeholders met and agreed on protocols.
