One man was killed, and two others wounded following a police-involved shooting incident in the Oropune district, on Monday night.

An official statement from the Police Service reports that officers of the Northern Division Task Force (Area Central) were on mobile patrol around 8:25 pm on Monday 14th December 2020, when they attempted to intercept a white Nissan Tiida motor vehicle with five male occupants.

The TTPS says the driver failed to stop and a chase ensued, southwards along Golden Grove Road and onto the Churchill Roosevelt Highway.

Upon passing the Oropune walk-over, the vehicle reportedly came to a stop and two men exited, pointed guns in the direction of the police officers and opened fire.

According to the Police Service, the officers returned fire in the direction of the men, in accordance with the TTPS Use of Force Policy.  The men reportedly ran into some nearby bushes, and police pursued them on foot; however, the two suspects eluded capture.

The TTPS release says officers then discovered three men in the vehicle with gunshot wounds about the body.

The men were taken for medical attention.  One of them, identified as Keith Wilson, of St. Helena, was pronounced dead. The other two suspects, both 20-year-olds of the Oropune District, were treated for their injuries.

Assistance was sought from the Air Support Unit, the Canine Unit, the Northern Division’s Emergency Response Patrol and the Arouca Crime Patrol for the suspects who escaped; however, they were not found and remain at-large.

Investigations are ongoing.
