PDP/UNC unity posters surface in Tobago

Tobagonians may have been caught off guard yesterday, after posters linking the United National Congress and the Progressive Democratic Patriots in an apparent Tobago House of Assembly elections coalition surfaced on the island.

Reminiscent of what happened in the days leading up to the August 10 General Election last year, where a poster bearing the image of United National Congress leader Kamla Persad-Bissessar called on Tobagonians to support Duke, the latest posters suggested Tobagonians do the same for the January 25 THA elections.

The posters stated, “Vote Unity,” with both the UNC and the PDP symbols and images of Persad-Bissessar, Oropouche East MP Roodal Moonilal, Pointe-a-Pierre MP David Lee and PDP members Watson Duke, Farley Augustine and Dr Faith B. Yisrael with the words “Together We Can,” vote Monday, January 25.

This time, however, some of the posters were unceremoniously ripped down from the sites they were placed, especially in Scarborough.

Guardian Media reached out to UNC Public Relations Officer Kirk Meighoo yesterday for a comment on whether the UNC was in any way responsible for posting the flyers.

However, Meighoo said he would not be taking any questions from Guardian Media until the ongoing impasse between the company and UNC is resolved. He said statements made by CNC3 Morning Brew host Natalie Ligour must be retracted and an apology issued from the company for failing to accept the UNC’s request to appear on the programme before the party takes any questions from the media house.

The UNC has indicated it was offended by a recent comment from Ligoure on her programme, which compared the party’s commentary in the build-up to last year’s General Election to elements of outgoing US President Donald Trump’s sentiments which sparked the recent protest at Capitol Hill in Washington.
