RHONDOR DOWLAT-ROSTANT

Robbery is believed to be the motive behind yesterday’s killing of a 76-year-old man, who was standing outside the Play Whe and Lotto booth at Jai’s Bar on Caroni Savannah Road, Chaguanas.

The victim has been identified as Mervyn Prescott, of Caroni Savannah Road, Chaguanas.

According to a police report, at about 6:55 pm on Monday April 19th, while he was standing at the Play Whe and Lotto booth, Prescott was accosted by a man and a struggle ensued.  During the struggle, a gunshot was heard, and Prescott collapsed.  The gunman then escaped in Prescott’s vehicle, a black Honda Vezel.  The vehicle was later found abandoned, approximately 110 meters north of Jai’s Bar.

Police were told that seconds before the shooting, the unidentified gunman was seen standing in an area outside the bar, in the vicinity of the Play Whe Booth.  The man, police said, approached Prescott as he alighted his vehicle and walked towards the bar.

Police officers who responded on the scene saw Prescott lying on the ground, made checks, found signs of life and took him to the Chaguanas Health Facility.

However, at about 7:31pm, Prescott was pronounced dead at the health facility by Dr. Hutton.

Crime scene personnel processed the scene and retrieved one 9mm spent shell casing.

Investigations are ongoing.
