A 50-year-old PH taxi driver appeared in a virtual court session yesterday charged with the murder of his common-law wife.

Ramesh Sieunarine, 50, was taken to the Princes Town Police Station where he appeared via video link before Senior Magistrate Indira Misir-Gosine. He was charged with the murder of Tricia Ramsaran, 37.

It is alleged that officers from the Barrackpore Police Station went to Sieunarine’s Sukhan Trace, Barrackpore home on the morning of June 9 after Sieunarine visited the station. The officers allegedly found Ramsaran’s nude body covered with a sheet at the back of the house. An autopsy revealed that she had been strangled.

Following advice from the Director of Public Prosecutions on Monday, Sieunarine was charged by WPC Callender-St Clair of the Homicide Bureau of Investigations Region 3.

Yesterday, prosecutor Sgt Shazeed Mohammed told the magistrate that the investigators still have to complete the file before sending it to the office of the Director of Public Prosecution for a state attorney to be appointed in the matter.

Sieunarine was not represented by an attorney. He was remanded into custody and the matter was adjourned to June 14.

Sieunarine had a previous conviction for manslaughter in the 2004 death of Lisa Sahadath. He pleaded guilty in that case and was placed on a $50,000 bond for five years.

Meanwhile, Ramsaran’s funeral service was held under Hindu rites in Barrackpore yesterday, followed by her cremation at the Shore of Peace, Mosquito Creek.
