Tobago accident victim Curtis Phillips.

A Tobago businessman is dead and another man injured, following a road traffic accident yesterday. The accident occurred around 11:25 am on the Plymouth Road.

Dead is Curtis Phillips 47, the owner of TK Hardware. He was driving his Black Mazda 4×4 vehicle at the time.

The other driver was identified as Kirton Alleyne, he was driving a white Nissan Frontier.

According to police reports, Alleyne was travelling from north to south along the roadway, while Phillips was travelling in the opposite direction. Reports indicate that Alleyne allegedly lost control of his vehicle, veered to the right side of the road and collided with Phillips’ vehicle. Guardian Media understands that Phillips exited his pickup, but collapsed a short distance away. He died at the scene. He suffered severe injuries to his body, causing blood loss.

District Medical Officer Dr Fidelis Okali Okali visited the scene and ordered the body removed to the Scarborough Hospital Mortuary.

Alleyne, who sustained head injuries, was rushed to the Scarborough General Hospital for treatment.

This is Tobago’s third road fatality for 2020.

Divisional Fire Officer David Thomas is also urging road users to drive with caution on the nation’s roads.

“We continue to appeal to drivers and road users to exercise caution. Approach the roadways with a high degree of responsibility. Knowing that we have quite a number of vehicles on the road, and the roadways were not originally designed for that capacity, if we continue not to exercise response behaviours we will continue to find ourselves facing catastrophes like the one today” Thomas said.(CT)
