PNM Couva South candidate Rackeal Bissoon during a walkabout in Orchard Gardens, Chaguanas, on Tuesday.

The PNM and UNC began walkabouts in communities throughout Central Trinidad yesterday.

Rackeal Bissoon, 24, who is contesting the Chaguanas West seat after being given the nod by the PNM in early June, said during a walkthrough of Orchard Gardens, that Chaguanas West was an area that neglected by their UNC MP.

“The people are complaining about no representation and no visible MP. I think that is something I can give to the people.”

Bissoon said drainage issues are a major problem for the people, especially in the community of Felicity.

She said a pump was recently installed and commissioned by Works Minister Rohan Sinanan in Felicity to help mitigate flooding in that area. Bissoon said she has been getting a 50-50 response where some persons are welcoming her, while some are sceptical.

Bissoon chose not to make any comments about her UNC opponent Dinesh Rambally who would be taking over from outgoing MP Ganga Singh.

Bissoon, a resident of Mamoral, is no newcomer to electoral politics.

She contested the 2019 Local Government Election for the seat of Caparo/Mamoral on the Couva/Tabaquite/Talparo Regional Corporation (CTTRC).

In Couva South, incumbent MP Rudranath Indarsingh, started walking twice a day since he was given the nod to represent the UNC for the third straight time.

Indarsingh said local government bodies were starved of resources and the Local Government Bill was thrown out of the window when the Prime Minister dissolved the Parliament.

He said “It is a common issue of local government neglect from the point of view of roads and drains. The CTTRC is suffering for funding. Sporting facilities where pavilions have collapsed. Unemployment, eight plants on the Point Lisas Industrial Estate have been mothballed, closed. The young people continue to ask where they can find jobs. The PNM promised local government reform in their manifesto. This government has had the success being the most deceptive, dishonest government that has not delivered on their promises.”
