The three children who survived last night’s ambush in Carapichaima in which two of their female relatives were killed are now in the care of the Children’s Authority.

Businesswoman Rohini Sandy Khan, the owner of ABC Flower Shop, Jerningham Junction, Cunupia, and her daughter Steffy Tiffany Khan, 19, were killed when gunmen ambushed them outside a relative’s home at Dynasty Drive North, Joyce Road, Chaguanas.

Autopsies are expected to be conducted today at the Forensic Science Centre in St James.

At about 7.21 pm on Thursday, a silver-coloured Nissan Wingroad, registration number PDP 6554, was seen facing south about 30 feet into a driveway with the front right driver door open and the lifeless body of Khan lying on the ground on her right side. The back left rear door of the vehicle was also open and the lifeless body of the younger victim was on the left rear passenger seat lying on her right said with her head partially out of the vehicle.

Both women had been shot multiple times by two gunmen wearing masks who walked up to the vehicle as it was about to reverse out of the yard.

The driver, a 20-year-old Venezuelan migrant, of Munroe Road, Cunupia, was also shot multiple times but he managed to escape and got help from another Venezuelan man who took him to the Chaguanas Health Facility. He was subsequently transferred to the Eric Williams Medical Sciences Complex, Mt Hope, where he is warded in serious condition.

The three children, all girls, ages eight, seven and one, were standing in the yard at the time and witnessed the murders. They were not hurt during the ambush.

Police officers who arrived on the scene took them to the Chaguanas Police Station and are now in the care of the Children’s Authority pending further enquiries.

Investigators retrieved five spent 9 mm shells, a black Samsung cell phone in a black case, a black wallet containing the identification card, driver’s permit in the name of Khan, $258 in cash and a PriceSmart card in the name of Steffy Khan.

A motive has not yet been determined for the double murder.
