One man was shot dead, and two others injured—including a pregnant woman—during a shooting incident in the capital city, Port of Spain, which sparked panic.

The deceased has been identified as Brandon Crichton, better known as ‘Shasi Smooth’.

According to a police report, at about 2:45 pm on Monday, a silver Tiida was in the vicinity of Queen and Nelson Streets when the occupants began shooting at pedestrians along the roadway.

Three people were shot—a 30-year-old pregnant woman, who was shot in the left shoulder; a 34-year-old man, who was shot in the abdomen; and Crichton, who subsequently succumbed to his wounds.

Police said officers recovered the vehicle at L’eau Place.

Bystanders and residents in the area told the Guardian Media that when the gunshots rang out, people were heard screaming and seen scampering to safety.

A resident from Duncan Street said shootings are escalating in the area and believes they are gang related.

“We need more police on foot and mobile patrols, and also to check on people who are seen watching around while in parked vehicles at the side of the road, especially by the plannings,” said one resident who wished to remain anonymous.

Police Service officials on the scene today included Ag Insp Stewart, officers from the IATF, Sgt Ramsumir and a team from the Homicide Bureau of Investigations.

Investigations are ongoing.
