One person is now in police custody after Central Division officers had cause to arrest him for possession of ammunition, during an anti-crime exercise in the Freeport district yesterday.
The exercise, which was conducted between 12 am and 4 am by WPC Tricia Sammy, of Central Division Operations Unit, on Sunday 29th April, 2018, also included officers of the Freeport Police Station.
Acting on information, officers proceeded to Bholai Trace West, Chase Village.
There, the officers observed a group of men standing in the roadway. Upon seeing the officers, two of the men ran off, causing the officers to give chase.
During the pursuit, one of the suspects pointed a gun at the officers and fired several shots, leading to an exchange of gunfire.
The armed suspect managed to escape, while the second suspect, a 28-year-old man, was apprehended a short distance away and searched.
The search resulted in one extended magazine with 22 rounds of 9mm ammunition being discovered in his possession.
The man was subsequently conveyed to the Freeport Police Station where charges are expected to be laid.
