Cunupia man charged with taxi driver's murder

A Cunupia man is expected to appear before a Tunapuna Magistrate today, charged with the 2016 murder of taxi driver Indranath Harrilal and common assault against one of his passengers.

Joey Kangal, 23, of Cliff Avenue, Madras Road, Cunupia, also faces charges of possession of firearm and possession of ammunition following advice received from Deputy Director of Public Prosecutions, Joan Honore-Paul, on Wednesday 3rd January, 2018.

Harrilal, 50, of St. Cecilia Street, Tunapuna, was plying his taxi for hire with three passengers along St. Thomas Street, Tunapuna, on Saturday 26th September, 2016, when a male passenger who was seated behind him, pulled out a gun and shot him multiple times in the head.

The assailant then pointed the gun at a female passenger, a 40-year-old Tunapuna woman before exiting the vehicle and escaping.

The victim died at the scene.

Kangal was charged by Cpl Nigel Bennett of Homicide Bureau of Investigations (HBI), Region 2, on Wednesday 3rd January, 2018.

The investigation was supervised by ASP (Ag.) Windel Flaviney and Insp. Andrew Lawrence, also of HBI, Region 2.
