Devon Seales is the 2016 Calypso Monarch.

Seales was crowned following his renditions of “Respect God's Voice” and “Spirit of Carnival” at Sunday's Dimanche Gras at the Queen's Park Savannah.

The 2016 Young King Calypso Monarch, Helon Francis, 22, took second place at his first appearance at the Dimache Gras while defending monarch Roderick “Chucky” Gordon placed third.

Seales' "Respect God's Voice” focussed on recent politics, as he reminded the former prime minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar of a quote she popularly used, "Vox Populi, Vox Dei", which is translated as "the voice of the people is the voice of God", telling her to respect the results of the 2015 General Election as "God's Voice".

His second tune of the night, “Spirit of Carnival”, which he performed dressed as a blue devil, focussed on the type of songs usually composed for the scond round of Dimanche Gras.

He noted that calypsonians usually sing party songs in round two but that in recent times many of the compositions are about politics.

The two songs won Seales a first prize of $1 million while Francis, Gordon and Karene Asche (fourth), took home up $500,000, $250,000 and $150,000, respectively.
