Gymnast Hislop named to All America team

Khazia His­lop, the daugh­ter of for­mer T&T World Cup goal­keep­er, Neil "Sha­ka" His­lop was named Sec­ond Team All Amer­i­ca on the floor for the 2019 reg­u­lar sea­son by the Women's Col­le­giate Gym­nas­tics As­so­ci­a­tion on Wednes­day.

This was the sec­ond con­sec­u­tive year that His­lop has been award­ed Sec­ond Team All Amer­i­ca on the floor by the Women's Col­le­giate Gym­nas­tics As­so­ci­a­tion.

Khazia's ac­com­plish­ment marks the Tar Heel's fifth All Amer­i­ca recog­ni­tion on Floor Ex­er­cise over the past 16 years.

The Eng­land-born His­lop who has com­pet­ed for T&T in the past and is a Sports Ad­min­is­tra­tion and Com­mu­ni­ca­tions Ma­jor stu­dent fin­ished the reg­u­lar sea­son (in­clud­ing the East At­lantic Gym­nas­tics League Cham­pi­onships) with a na­tion­al qual­i­fy­ing score of 9.925.

She is tied at the No. 16 spot in the coun­try. and has re­mained one of the top gym­nasts in the coun­try on the floor for the last two years while main­tain­ing scor­ing above a 9.850 for 20-con­sec­u­tive weeks on floor ex­er­cise.

His­lop joins Tar Heel leg­end Court­ney Bumpers as the on­ly gym­nasts in pro­gram his­to­ry to earn All Amer­i­ca ho­n­ours twice on the floor.

Bumpers were named First Team All Amer­i­ca on the floor in 2004 and 2005. His­lop's two times, Bumpers two times, and for­mer Car­oli­na gym­nast Chris­tine Ro­bel­la (2006) make up the Tar Heel's five All Amer­i­ca ho­n­ours over the last 16 years.

Last Sat­ur­day, His­lop won the East At­lantic Gym­nas­tics League Cham­pi­onships on vault and tied for first place on the floor to lead the Tar Heels to a fifth-place fin­ish in Sat­ur­day's EAGL Cham­pi­onships.

North Car­oli­na scored 193.950 and had a gym­nast on the podi­um in each of the four events in the meet on the cam­pus of the Uni­ver­si­ty of New Hamp­shire.

Mov­ing over to the beam, Car­oli­na scored a 48.700, which was its high­est score on the ap­pa­ra­tus since Feb­ru­ary 16th.

His­lop, 20, placed sec­ond in the meet with a score of 9.875, her high­est score since that same meet. Alex­is Allen placed eighth in the event with a 9.800 on beam.

Com­pet­ing on the floor, His­lop scored a 9.900 to con­tribute to a three-way tie at first place in the event with Ava Watkins of New Hamp­shire and Alexa Philips of North Car­oli­na State.

And in its fi­nal event of the day, the vault His­lop won the event out­right with a score of 9.875 and team-mate Mikay­la Robin­son was fourth with a 9.825.

Over­all, His­lop was the on­ly gym­nast at the event to place on the podi­um in three events as she placed first on vault and floor and sec­ond on beam.

In ad­di­tion, she was the first Tar Heel to win an in­di­vid­ual EAGL Cham­pi­onship on an event in con­sec­u­tive years since 2004-06 when Court­ney Bumpers won the EAGL Cham­pi­onship on Floor for three years.

His­lop was al­so the first North Car­oli­na gym­nast to win two in­di­vid­ual events at the EAGL Cham­pi­onships since Court­ney Bumpers won three events in 2005.

With His­lop win­ning both vault and floor, Tar Heel gym­nasts have now won both events at the EAGL Cham­pi­onships each of the last two sea­sons.

North Car­oli­na fin­ished the meet with four top-three fin­ish­es, ty­ing EAGL Cham­pi­on New Hamp­shire for the most at the meet.

Based on their per­for­mances dur­ing the sea­son His­lop and Robin­son earn in­di­vid­ual spots to com­pete in the 2019 NCAA Women's Gym­nas­tics Re­gion­als Cham­pi­onships for the third con­sec­u­tive year, the Athens Re­gion­al at the Uni­ver­si­ty of Geor­gia from April 4-6.

His­lop will com­pete on vault, beam and floor dur­ing the Re­gion­al af­ter she earned an in­di­vid­ual spot on vault with a na­tion­al qual­i­fy­ing score of 9.890, plac­ing 23rd in the na­tion.

On beam, His­lop is ranked 79th in the na­tion with an NQS 9.855 through­out the sea­son and she checks in at 16th on the floor.

She com­petes in Ses­sion I on Fri­day, April 5th, which will start at ap­prox­i­mate­ly 2 p.m go­ing sec­ond (beam), third (floor) and fourth (vault) ro­ta­tions with­in the ro­ta­tion with the Iowa Cy­clones.
