Police rescue La Brea kidnap victim

A 46-year-old fisherman, who was reportedly kidnapped on Monday 13th August, 2018, has been rescued by officers of the Anti-Kidnapping Unit (AKU) during an anti-crime exercise conducted in the Mayaro district this afternoon.

The victim was at his La Brea home in the company of friends around 3:00 am on Monday 13th August, 2018, when three men purporting to be police officers entered the premises and forced him into a silver Nissan AD wagon against his will.

The assailants claimed they were conveying the victim to the La Brea Police Station.

However, relatives of the victim soon discovered that he was not being detained at a police station.

The suspects subsequently contacted the victim’s mother demanding a ransom in exchange for his safe release.

A report was made to the La Brea Police Station at 3:40 am on the same date of the abduction. An investigation was launched by Snr. Supt. (Ag.) Ajith Persad, Port of Spain Criminal Investigations Department, which resulted in the man being found handcuffed in a shack in a forested area, off Ocean Sand Road, Mayaro, around 2:00 pm on Wednesday 15th August, 2018.

ASP (Ag.) Anderson Pariman and Insp. Nicholas Thomas, both of AKU, are assisting Snr. Supt. (Ag.) Persad with enquiries.
