The Institute of Marine Affairs (IMA) has deployed a team to investigate the reason why the Carli Bay river has turned bright fluorescent green.

Denyse Karissa Deowan posted photos and a video of the river on Facebook Tuesday afternoon.

"This is seriously real. The river water is fluorescent green right now," she said.

She added, "It is literally fluorescent green. All the fishes probably dying. Not to mention the caymans that live here probably have a different colour if they are alive still."

While the actual cause of the river turning green is not yet known, many are already suggesting chemical waste.

In January 2011, Canada's Goldstream River bizarrely started flowing a fluorescent green and investigators found that an organic compound used as a dye to test water systems was to blame.

The IMA will also seek to determine whether some an algae is contributing to the change of colour.

Deowan said in her post that the change of colour affects the entire river.
