A prison officer with nine years of service in the T&T Prison Service was arrested for attempting to smuggle marijuana and alcohol into the Maximum-Security Prison, on Friday 20th February 2021.
The marijuana reportedly had been concealed in food.
According to a police report, at about 7:15 pm, 31-year-old Steffon Deocharan, who hails from Carapo, was on duty at the Maximum-Security Prison in Arouca, when he reported that he was leaving to collect some food. He is said to have returned five minutes later with a bowl of food and a 1.5 litre water bottle. However, upon entering the security check point, he was stopped and searched by prison officer St Hillarie, who was on duty.
The bowl of food was passed through the scanner and PO1 Hillarie observed foreign objects in the food. The food was searched by Supt Davis who recovered and seized four packages wrapped in transparent plastic wrap containing marijuana, which were in a frozen state.
When weighed, the drugs had a combined weight of 1,170 grammes.
In addition, the contents of the 1.5 litre water bottle were checked and revealed to be alcohol.
The prison officer was immediately detained, and Arouca Police were contacted.
The Police Service has confirmed that the prison officer has been charged with the offence.
He is expected to appear before an Arima Magistrate in a virtual hearing, today, Monday 22 February 2021.
