Prime Minister Dr Keith Rowley has described the late Professor Selwyn Ryan as a leading light, not only for his work or accomplishments but also because of the person her was.

“In Latin, we say we are a light shining in the west. He was one of the brightest lights that shone in the west,” Dr Rowley said.

Speaking at the Professor’s funeral service at St. Finbar’s Roman Catholic Church in Diego Martin on Friday, Dr Rowley said he respected Dr Ryan’s work and was thankful to know him as a professional, but also a friend.

“I’m proud to have known him and shared moments with him, whether it’s over a drink or a book,” PM Rowley stated.

Dr Rowley said as the leader of the PNM he had tremendous respect for Professor Ryan.

He said he was satisfied with his balance and his intellectual strength.

“Professor Ryan was a listener, he was enquirer. Professor Ryan had the ability to be critical but not condemnatory,” the Prime Minister said.

Dr Rowley said just as Professor Ryan had written a book on the late Dr Eric Williams titled, Eric Williams: The Myth and the Man, he had asked him to write about the PNM. Unfortunately, he did not get a chance to, and Dr Rowley hopes someone he mentored will pick up where he left off.

Professor Ryan, a Princes Town native, died on the March 12th after battling an illness.
