There is no leadership crisis in the Sanatan Dharma Maha Sabha (SDMS) organisation.

This is the view of Pundit Lutchmidath Maharaj, who has been a member of the SDMS for more than 30 years.

During an interview with Guardian Media yesterday, Pundit Maharaj said the organization’s constitution must be able to run its course.

“The Maha Sabha is not a sporting club, it is a religious organization,” he said.

Pundit Maharaj said in his personal opinion, he is satisfied with the current organizational structure.

According to him, “I know there were some issues regarding Mr Vijay Maharaj’s assumption to the role of Secretary-General but as far as I am aware, I attended the executive meeting just last week and Mr Maharaj never purported himself or he never projected himself to be Secretary-General”.

Mr Vijay Maharaj assumed the position as Acting Secretary-General of the SDMS after his father’s passing last November. However, a group of pundits have issued a pre-action protocol letter to both Maharaj and Krishna Rambally challenging the legitimacy of their positions within the organization unless elections are held.

Pundit Maharaj said as far as he is aware an election can only be announced at the Conference of Delegates which is to be held later this year.

He noted, “I am no constitutional expert but something like that could come forward in the form of a motion being brought forward to the executive and of course once it is voted upon that should be able to take place”.

Meanwhile, Member of Parliament for Tabaquite Dr Suruj Rambachan believes it is important for members of the SDMS to come together and ventilate their issues around the table.

Failure to this, he stated will “further splinter the Hindu community”.

“I don’t think it is necessary to go through a court matter to do that”, the MP told Guardian Media.

He noted, “the Hindu tradition is a tradition that has always promoted the panchayat, and the panchayat is a system where the elders chosen by the maturity of their judgement will sit down and help resolve issues”.

Also, Head of the Inter-Religious Organization, Dr Knolly Clarke stated while he does not want to comment on the matter, he is willing to lend remediation assistance to the SDMS. He also said the IRO plans to bring the matter up during its next meeting.
