RBL employees refused to take up work today

Employees of Republic Bank Limited (RBL), Tunapuna, refused to take up duty this morning, after a senior official tested positive for the COVID-19 virus.

Their trepidation followed on the heels of an alleged refusal by RBL to close the branch for sanitizing.

When contacted, second vice president of the Banking Insurance and General Workers Union (BIGWU), Jason Brown confirmed that the employees had, “invoked their legal right to refuse to work in a hazardous environment.”

Worried that the branch had been opened to the public despite these concerns thereby exposing them unknowingly, Brown said the matter had been escalated to RBL’s head office but up to 1 pm, there had been no feedback.
