Two weeks after the near beheading of Penal mother Reshma Kanchan, her former husband Sunil Dookie stood before a Siparia Magistrate accused of her murder.
Magistrate Aden Stroude read the charges to Dookie, 36 of Thompson Trace, Siparia that on September 29, he murdered Kanchan, 25, along Laltoo Trace, Penal contrary to the Offences Against the Person Act. Dookie was not called upon to plead as murder is an indictable offence.
He participated in the virtual hearing while at the Siparia Police Station.
Stroude adjourned the matter to November 9 and remanded Dookie into the State’s custody.
On Friday, Deputy Director of Public Prosecutions Joan Honore-Paul instructed investigators to charge Dookie with murder. PC Lall of the Homicide Bureau of Investigations: Region Three laid the charge.
According to a police report, Kanchan left her home along Laltoo Trace Extension around 8.45 am on September 29.
Neighbours reported that they saw Kanchan arguing with a person in a black wagon. Shortly after the wagon sped off, villagers found her lying dead on the ground with chopped wounds on her neck, face and hands.
Police later held Dookie after the vehicle he was driving collided with a metal garbage bin along the Laltoo Branch Road.
They found him suffering from a wound to his neck.
Police investigations revealed that Dookie made a report of domestic problems with Kanchan and suicidal feelings to the Siparia Police Station on September 28.
Kanchan was the 36th murder victim of domestic violence in 2020.
